The history of ripped jeans traces back to the rebellious punk rock movement of the 1970s. The style emerged as a symbol of rebellion, with bands like the Ramones and the Clash deliberately tearing their jeans to reject societal norms and mainstream culture.

The trend gained further traction during the grunge era of the 1980s and 1990s, popularized by music icons like Kurt Cobain, who embraced the distressed look as a reflection of anti-conformity and the struggles of everyday life.

The adoption of ripped jeans by celebrities and supermodels, along with extensive media exposure, contributed to their mainstream acceptance and popularity in fashion. Over the years, ripped jeans have evolved from a counter-cultural statement to a staple in casual wear, with various styles and interpretations emerging.

Is Ripped Jeans Haram?

Wearing ripped jeans is considered haram in Islam because it exposes the skin and body shape. A Muslim is required to cover their awrah (private parts) adequately to avoid spreading temptation and aiding others in committing sins. Therefore, ripped jeans are not recommended to be worn.

Religious Arguments

Muslim women have a religious obligation to conceal their awrah (private parts), as mentioned in the Quran (Surah An-Nur 24:31 and Surah Al Ahzab 33:59). The concept of awrah encompasses most of a woman’s body, with exceptions for the face and palms, according to various scholars’ interpretations.

“And tell the believing women to lower their gaze and guard their chastity, and not to reveal their adornments except what normally appears.

Let them draw their veils over their chests, and not reveal their ˹hidden˺ adornments except to their husbands, their fathers, their fathers-in-law, their sons, their stepsons, their brothers, their brothers’ sons or sisters’ sons, their fellow women, those ˹bondwomen˺ in their possession, male attendants with no desire, or children who are still unaware of women’s nakedness.

Let them not stomp their feet, drawing attention to their hidden adornments. Turn to Allah in repentance all together, O  believers, so that you may be successful.”

“O Prophet! Ask your wives, daughters, and believing women to draw their cloaks over their bodies. In this way, it is more likely that they will be recognized ˹as virtuous˺ and not be harassed. And Allah is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.”

In light of these guidelines, ripped jeans with tears or holes do not align with the Islamic principles of modesty.

Final Thought

In conclusion, wearing ripped jeans is considered haram in Islam due to their tendency to expose the skin and body shape, which goes against the principles of modesty and covering the awrah (private parts).

The Quran emphasizes the importance of concealing one’s adornments, and while ripped jeans may be a fashion statement for some, they do not align with the religious requirements of modest clothing. Therefore, it is advisable for Muslims to opt for attire that adheres to Islamic principles of modesty and decency.
